Celebrating Holy Thursday at home

When Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples, it was the last meal with His disciples before His death and resurrection. Thus, Holy Thursday has been commonly known as “The Last Supper.”

You also have probably heard many people calling Holy Thursday, “Maundy Thursday.” The word “maundy” comes from the Latin word “mandatum,” which means “commandment". During the Passover, Jesus gave a new commandment.

Jesus said, “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I loved you, you also should love another”

(John 13:34).

How can we celebrate at home?

• We can write a list of prayers and keep it in our Bible or near a Cross or a picture of Christ or in a place in our home where we pray. The list can include specific requests for ourselves, our family, our friends, our priests or the whole world. Whatever you want to say or to ask God. We can offer all the masses during the Easter Triduum for the intentions in our prayer list.
• Before the Last Supper, Jesus showed us how to love, by washing the feet of His disciples. He showed us that true love is selfless love.  As we celebrate Maundy Thursday at our home this year, we can wash the feet of our family members. By washing each other's feet, may we show selfless love to one another just like Jesus!

• This hymn is commonly sung in churches on Holy Thursday while the priest is washing the feet of the people. It's called “Ubi Caritas et Amor” (“Where Charity and Love Are”). We encourage you to learn this hymn together as a family and sing together!

Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, three days after his crucifixion. It is the most important date on the Christian calendar. Easter marks the end of the 40-day period of Lent, which is a traditional time of fasting that begins on Ash Wednesday. The week before Easter is known as the Holy Week. It begins on Palm Sunday and includes Maundy Thursday (the day of the Last Supper), Good Friday (the day of Christ’s crucifixion) and Holy Saturday (the time between the crucifixion and resurrection).
