Wash and Pray!

Been washing those hands enough? If you are thinking that you are only sitting in your house, only doing the work you regularly do, not going out, not meeting people from outside, then you don’t have to wash your hands much, right? Well, no! We have been advised to wash our hands often to prevent the spread of germs and viruses. These little rascals get everywhere and the best way to stifle their spread is to wash with soap and water.

Washing hands with soap and water

Now what has that to do with our Faith? Everything!

Let us learn and put to practice 1 Thessalonians 5:17, “ pray without ceasing”.

We say so often that it’s hard to pray or what do I pray or I never find the time. Did you know that St Theresa of Child Jesus is the patron saint of Evangelization. This little saint, little only in age, never picked up a microphone to preach, did not go to different places to tell about Jesus. She stayed in her convent, praying. That was enough! God our Father gives us time and reason!

Now lets say you wash your hands 5 times in a day. Each time you do so, try saying in your mind, “Lord I pray for …… (any thing that you’d like to pray for. E.g. your friends whom you miss from school, that they and their families may be safe, for your teachers, for your Parish Priest, for all the medical personnel working tirelessly, for maybe a person somewhere who is feeling alone, for your grandparents. ) and then offer the Our Father prayer for them as you lather your hands for 20 seconds. Wash and pray!

How many causes and people have you prayed for today? Don’t forget to pray for yourself!

A special message from the Gospel of St.John

Child sitting down with a tablet and pencilAll the Gospels in the New Testament of the Holy Bible tell about the life of Jesus, yet each Book may have a special message. The Gospel of John is the fourth book among the Gospels in the New Testament. We learn from Catholic tradition that it was written by St John the Apostle, son of Zebedee.

 St John is known to be the disciple whom Jesus loved the most. He is also believed to be the youngest among the 12 Apostles. It shouldn’t be surprising that it was His most favorite disciple who wrote the Gospel which describes Jesus the most. Jesus reveals Himself more and more to the one who loves Him the most.

How much do you know about Easter?

Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, three days after his crucifixion. It is the most important date on the Christian calendar. Easter marks the end of the 40-day period of Lent, which is a traditional time of fasting that begins on Ash Wednesday. The week before Easter is known as the Holy Week. It begins on Palm Sunday and includes Maundy Thursday (the day of the Last Supper), Good Friday (the day of Christ’s crucifixion) and Holy Saturday (the time between the crucifixion and resurrection).

“Do not fear, for I am with you”

Do not be afraid says the Lord. The global outbreak of the novel coronavirus has brought about a lot of fear, anxiety and uncertainty into your world. Your routine has changed, you don’t get to see your friends, your teachers, everything you are used to doing has changed. Some of you are enjoying this time off but some of you are already bored and can’t wait for things to go back to normal. How much TV can you watch, huh? During these times, the Word of God and the promise of God’s protection and mercy for all his children will be a great comfort to you and will guide you everyday.

Here are a few verses that can help you get through this time no matter what you are feeling:

1. “I am scared of what is going on.” - Do not be afraid and believe in God’s protection which he promises to all his faithful children.

Isaiah 41:10
“Do not fear, for I am with you,
    do not be afraid, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
    I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.”

2. “I am bored.” - See how you can help your parents around the house. Learn a new skill, check on friends and neighbors to see if they need anything, drop off food or supplies at a shelter, start a Facebook fundraiser.

Matthew 19:19
“Honor your father and mother; also, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

3. “I can’t help getting into a fight with my family.” - Our Lord Jesus Christ set an example of unconditional love for us by dying on the cross so that our sins may be forgiven. We can show the same love to our family when we forgive their little mistakes, rude words and behavior towards us.

Ephesians 4:32
"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another,
as God in Christ has forgiven you.”

4. “I am anxious and worry about the future.” - This is the time when your faith should exceed your worry. You should trust that God is in control.

Joshua 1:9
“Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed,
for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

5. “I waste my time binge watching TV or playing games.” - Schedule time for prayer and reading the Word of God every day. Personal prayer will make your relationship with God stronger. Reading the Word of God will provide you guidance in your everyday life.

Exodus 15:2
The Lord is my strength and my might,
    and he has become my salvation;
this is my God, and I will praise him,
    my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
